This project involved the transformation of a small farm cottage set within the countryside overlooking the Moray Firth. Much loved by the clients, the property had previously been extended and refurbished several decades ago, leaving it in need of a thoughtful reimagining to better suit contemporary living while respecting its rural character.

CRGP worked closely with the clients to develop a design that would sit comfortably within its agricultural setting, introduce a modern architectural language, and remain sensitive to the project budget. The design approach focused on carefully stripping the cottage back to its essential form and introducing a series of sympathetic extensions that celebrate and complement the original building rather than compete with it.

The new additions create a clear dialogue between old and new. Fully vaulted spaces in the extensions provide generous volumes and a sense of openness, offering a striking contrast to the more intimate proportions of the original cottage interiors. This interplay between scales helps retain the charm of the historic spaces while introducing light-filled contemporary areas for everyday living.

Throughout the project, particular care was taken to preserve original features wherever possible. Stone sourced from the farm itself was incorporated into the new work, helping to anchor the building within its landscape and reinforce its connection to the surrounding setting. The result is a carefully balanced home that respects its heritage while providing a refreshed and modern environment for the clients.
